HAND COILED ZUNI PUEBLO POTTERY

by Carlos Laate

Carlos Laate of Zuni Pueblo is the nephew of Jennie Laate who taught pottery at Zuni High school for many years. Noreen Simplicio later took over her position followed by Gabriel Paloma. Noreen, Agnes & Anderson Peynetsa, Gabriel and many other well-known potters were all Jennie's students. Carlos is one of many who has inherited a full and rich revived tradition thanks to the efforts of those who came before him. He learned pottery making from Jennie and from his grandmother, Daisy Hooee. He has been an active potter since 1987.

Carlos Laate's work is vibrant and traditional utilizing rosettes and the "deer in house" heart line designs to create pottery that is characterized by excellent shape and superb execution of both graphics and coloring. Solid whites, reds and blacks; generally bold lines but increasingly finer strokes are coming into play. His past work was characterized by more primitively drawn lines and designs but he has progressed steadily.

This piece features beautiful black on red traditional designs with great shape. It is signed by Carlos.

HAND COILED SANTO DOMINGO POTTERY

by Robert Tenorio

Robert Tenorio was born in 1950 into the Santo Domingo “Kewa” Pueblo. He has been working with clay since the age of 10. He was taught all the fundamentals of hand coiling pottery using ancient traditional methods from his family members. Lupe Tenorio shared some of her special techniques with Robert. He was also inspired to continue the long lived family tradition from the admiration he had for old pottery from his village.

Robert specializes in hand coiled traditional Santo Domingo pottery. He gathers his clay and other natural pigments from within the Santo Domingo Pueblo. Then, he soaks the clay, cleans, sifts, mixes, hand coils, shapes, sands, paints, and fires his pottery, outdoors, using cottonwood bark. The colors he uses to paint his pottery with are basically derived from  native plants also hand picked by Robert, which are boiled together to complete his masterpieces. He hand coils many shapes and sizes of pottery like water vessels, dough bowls, and traditional pots. Robert is continuously experimenting with different types of plants in hopes of making the special black color which was used on pottery several 100’s of years ago. He signs his pottery as: Robert Tenorio, followed by small dipper star formation, and Kewa.

NAVAJO "ELEMENTAL" POTTERY

by Gerald Pinto

Gerald Pinto is a member of the Navajo-Dine tribe and was born and raised in Vanderwagon, NM. Accented with turquoise and copper, Gerald's work is created using the Japanese Raku firing technique which. Gerald uses an iron based clay to create a slip which he then uses as an armor coating for the pot in the firing process. The pots gain their signature brown and black colors during the second firing. Gerald uses cedar bunches which are flash fired directly on the naked pots. The gold color is created by the iron slip and the black comes from the smoke as the carbon is absorbed. He has given this series of pottery the name "Elemental".
