HAND CRAFTED OLD PAWN Indian jewelry Santo Domingo battery backed Thunderbird necklace

In the 1930s and 40's, Santo Domingo artists had a hard time finding the traditional backing materials for their jewelry, namely black jet or shell. a train carrying car batteries crashed near the area, providing the residents with plastic casings to use as a substitute. the artists glued the stones to the casing, and then ground down the outer edges to match the shape of the stone work. this piece is a great example of the work from that era. the necklace is missing the stones from the beak and one of the sections on the necklace, very typical for these pieces made so long ago. the artist is unknown, as there are no markings.

Size: Bird pendant  is 2 1/8" Wide, 2 1/4" Tall. Necklace is 27" in Total Length.

This is a Stunning Hand Crafted old Indian jewelry zuni inlay Owl squash blossom necklace Set by a legend in zuni jewelry. blake and velma are known for their excellent owl inlay designs. This Stunning set is a fine, early example of their work. The set features authentic turquoise, Tortoise shell, coral, shell and mother of pearl stones set in beautiful inlay work. The set includes a large Squash Blossom necklace, clip on earrings, and matching bracelet. Blake and velma began creating jewelry in 1957. This piece exhibits it age with the inclusion of Tortoise shell. The set has not been cleaned as most collectors prefer the old pawn look.

SIZE:

Necklace is 26" long. The center naja measures 3" x 3 1/4". Each owl on the necklace is 1 3/4" tall. Earrings are 1 1/4" long with clips. Bracelet has a 6 3/4" inside circumference including the opening.Bracelet face is 1 3/4" Tall.
