Mary John

Mary started learning to silver smith in 1993. When first starting out she would draw out her own ideas and she watched others to learn style and techniques. She was a natural her first piece of jewelry was a 5-stone bracelet made with Chinese Turquoise.

She has always express an interest in learning more about her craft. Her work is signed with a single “M”. Mary makes jewelry with both contemporary and traditional designs. She excels at stamp work, heavy gauge wirework, stone setting, and cut silver designs.

Mary currently lives in Tohajiilee (formerly known as Canoncito) on the Navajo reservation where she grew up. She learned to speak Navajo from her parents at an early age, a tradition she has passed on to her daughter Chey. When she is not working she enjoys cooking, movies and playing bingo. She also is teaching her daughter how to weave traditional Navajo rugs. When Chey is at least 15 Mary wants to teach her how to silversmith to keep the Native American traditions going.
