Teresa Gutierrez was born in 1933 in Santa Clara Pueblo to Rosita Velarde. Her journey into the world of pottery commenced by observing and assisting her mother as she grew. With time, Teresa honed a distinctive style characterized by meticulously carved black pottery, featuring sharp, well-defined lines accentuated with matte paint. Throughout her illustrious career, Teresa garnered a multitude of accolades, including numerous ribbons at the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and the renowned Santa Fe Indian Market. Teresa is the proud mother of Carol Velarde, Marie Suazo, Doris Tenorio, and Tony Gutierrez, Jr., all of whom have made their mark as accomplished potters hailing from Santa Clara Pueblo.
