Sue Tapia, who was born in May 1946 to Edward Poncho Sr. and Mabel Poncho of Laguna Pueblo, grew up in a time when many Laguna men had well-paying jobs, giving women like Mabel more freedom to pursue their interests. Mabel taught Sue how to make pottery in the traditional way, and together they would sell their pieces along Route 66. While Mabel's pottery was primarily for ceremonial use, Sue learned to make Potsuwi'i pottery after marrying Tom Tapia and moving to San Juan Pueblo. Tom, who learned the traditional methods from his mother and later added his own touch with sgraffito, would design the pots while Sue decorated them. Their unique collaboration earned them numerous awards at prestigious events. After Tom passed away in 2015, Sue returned to her roots at Laguna Pueblo. This piece is signed by Sue.
