Hopi Hand Coiled Pottery Bowl

Born in 1958, James Nampeyo was a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano, coming from a line of skilled Hopi-Tewa potters. His grandmother, Fannie Polacca Nampeyo, and mother, Leah Garcia Nampeyo, were both influential in his development as an artist. James was surrounded by master potters growing up, but it was his grandmother who instilled in him the importance of traditional shapes, styles, and designs from ancient Sikyatki, made famous by his great-grandmother. Despite living in Tucson for many years, James continued to gather his own clay from the Hopi mesas and prepare his own painting materials. He also collaborated with his wife, Fawn Navasie, who came from a long line of talented potters, but his own creations always stayed true to the teachings of his grandmother and the legacy of his great-grandmother. James passed away in July 2019.

The piece was hand coiled and painted in the traditional methods and designs. It is signed James G Nampeyo.
