Royston Turquoise comes from the Royston mining district located near Tonopah, Nevada and has been mined since the early 1900s. "Royston Turquoise" originally consisted of four old Turquoise claims located within the Royston range: Bunker Hill, Easter Blue, Oscar Wehrend, and Royal Blue. The Royal Blue mine was responsible for the majority of the turquoise mined in the area and is often referred to as Royston Royal Blue.
The Royston area mines produces some incredible turquoise ranging in color from a deep sky blue to dark greens. Often the colors run together in the same stone with golden brown mottled or webbed matrix. The mines currently produce some very high grade material, but in limited quantities. Visitors to the Royal Blue mine can currently pay to dig through the large tailing piles. Currently, the most active Royston mines are the Royal Blue, Montezuma, Aztec and High Grade Ridge mines.
Because of the many years of mining and intermixing of rough, most of the turquoise from this area will simply be identified as Royston turquoise.
